What is Crown of Byzantus?
The throne of the once-mighty Eastern Empire sits empty. The land has become a battleground between would-be emperors and usurpers, or those who only wish to exploit the chaos. As a landless knight having arrived to Byzantium in search of fame and fortune, your task is not easy. You must raise an army, lead them into battle and grow stronger through quests and perilous adventure until you can wage war over the Crown of Byzantus itself.
The Emperor is dead! Long live the Emperor!
Crown of Byzantus is a browser-based MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) combining strategy and adventure. The players are knights competing for the throne of the crumbling Byzantine Empire. Sent to the Land of Byzantium by their liege lords, they must raise an army and rise from lowly Knight Errants to mighty Champions, battling their way through adventures, quests and jousts, until it is time to embark on a war conquest and claim the throne. Byzantus is based loosely on the late 14th century Byzantine Empire spiced up with monsters, relics and a whole lot of action. It does NOT feature farming, raising pigs or building log cabins.
Crown of Byzantus is a game played in limited short game sessions throughout the day. The game world is persistent and an active player typically plays the game for months.
The most successful games of the genre are OGame (30 million users), Travian (5.1 million active users) and Seafight (25 million users). We estimate an average lifetime ARPU (average revenue per user) of 1.5 EUR for successful games.
What makes case Crown of Byzantus exceptional?
The medieval genre in browser games is choked with village building, farming simulations and gladiatorial combat. Crown of Byzantus steers clear from that crowd and instead makes the player a hero, a knight and a warlord in search of gold and glory… at least for a few minutes a day.
Crown of Byzantus is based on historical events in the 14th century but with supernatural elements based on the region and writings of medieval scholars. The player starts by building his army, unlocking new units and features as he rises through the titles of nobility. Eventually he will become embroiled in an epic war of conquest that determines the Emperor, the leading player on the server.
Crown of Byzantus is the first large-scale Finnish production for the booming markets of browser-based MMOGs with persistent game worlds. Crown of Byzantus was the other Finnish game project along with Recoil Games’s Earth No More to receive 500 000 DKK funding from Nordic Games Program in spring 2009. Due to the emerging nature of the markets the overall game quality is still low and thus Crown of Byzantus can easily challenge the market leaders in quality.
